Age 50, died Saturday, September 29, 2001 at her home in Monroe, Wisconsin following a courageous battle with cancer. Mary Kay was born in Kaukauna on June 22, 1951, daughter of the late Urban and Catherine (Van Handel) Micke. She graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1969 and received her Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. She lived in Milwaukee unto moving to Monroe in 1991 and had worked for the Green County Department of Social Services for ten years. Mary Kay was the current president of union local #1162 of AFSCME. She was also a member of the National Scrabble Association.
She is survived by five brothers and sisters: Harold Micke of Kaukauna; Norman Micke and his special friend Gael Bertolino of Madison; John (Mary Beth) Micke of DePere; Melvin (Nina Matterella) Micke of Okemos, Michigan; Luane Quella of Appleton. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, and her dog and loyal companion Molly. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Janet Vande Hey.
The funeral liturgy for Mary Kay will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna with Fr. Jack Mullarkey officiating. Inurnment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Wednesday from 2:00 PM until the hour of the liturgy. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society.
