Mary Jane Desten died Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Hospital as she neared her 80th birthday. Mary Jane was born on October 25, 1922, in Appleton, to the late Peter “Ed” and Verona (Huven) Engmann. She married Lloyd O. Desten on June 18, 1941, in Appleton; he preceded her in death on February 6, 1994. Mary Jane enjoyed various interests, including gardening, her dog Peetie and her other beloved animals, and especially the time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her daughter, Mariann (Jody) Ludvigsen, Menasha, Teresa (Gary) Schumacher, Appleton, Diane (Bob) Steiner, Greenville, Barb (Bob) Steenis, Kaukauna, Donna (Chris) “Bill” Steiner, Holly, Michigan; her son, Chuck (Dee) Desten, Appleton; 22 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; her brother, Bud Engmann, Elko, Nevada; her sisters, Virginia Stammer, Appleton, and Evelyn Blackwood, Appleton; and her sisters-in-law, Josephine Sousek, Appleton, and La Verne Desten, Appleton. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2002, at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, Morrison Street at Wisconsin Avenue, Appleton, with Fr. William Hoffman officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until the time of services. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton on Monday. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Mary Jane’s health care providers for their years of loving care.
