Mary Elizabeth Herwig

Mary Elizabeth Herwig, 98, of Appleton, Wisconsin, passed away, surrounded by family on July 8, 2024. 

Mary was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on June 22, 1926, to George and Eleanor (Knapstein) Dietz and grew up on the family farm in Greenville. 

Mary graduated from St. Mary High School in Menasha on Sunday, May 28, 1944. She then attended Marquette University where she graduated from the School of Dental Hygiene on Tuesday, July 2, 1946, and was a member of the Alpha Delta Eta Sorority. 

On June 14, 1947, she married Robert Herwig and together they raised 6 wonderful children. 

In her early years, she enjoyed fishing, and boating on Lake Winnebago as well as traveling throughout the United States and overseas. Her most memorable experience was meeting Pope John Paul II in St. Peters Square. 

Later, she enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Glacier Wood Golf Course in Iola. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and she gave of her time volunteering with the Sacred Heart group for St. Vincent De Paul. 

Mary is survived by her children: Gary Herwig, Dianne (Frank) Michalkiewicz, Bob Herwig Jr., Joanne (Dave) Kemps, Mary Anne Herwig (K-9 Oliver) and Bruce Herwig; grandchildren: Eric Laux, Chad (Jennifer) Laux, Andy (Stacy) Kemps, Tim (Lisa) Kemps, Melissa (Brad) Zuleger, Tara Herwig, Michelle (Nate) Shortess, Danielle Herwig and 12 great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sister Rita (Chuck) Brandt, brother John (Syliva) Dietz, brother and sister-in-law Delores (Karl) Bohnsack. 

Visitation for Mary will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (222 E. Fremont Street, Appleton, WI 54915) from 9:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am.
