Surrounded by her loving family, Mary, age 101, died Monday, January 28, 2002 at the Appleton Medical Center. Mary was born in Hollandtown on March 27, 1900, daughter of the late William and Anna (Glasheen) Campbell. In 1928, Mary married Bert Van Abel in Hollandtown; Bert preceded her in death in 1946. Many will remember Mary as a dedicated and devout Christian woman who dedicated her entire life to the instruction of the young and the raising of her own family. She attended the Outagamie County Normal School and taught elementary school first in Hollandtown, and later at Sybil Hoppe School in Green Bay until the time of her retirement.
Survivors include two sons: Tom (Jacquelyn) Van Abel and Jim (Marlene) Van Abel, both of Kaukauna; six grandchildren: Gary (Elizabeth) Van Abel and their children Carolyn, Mary, and Michael; Dick (Sue) Van Abel and their sons Luke and John; Karen (Joe) Meyer and their children Leah, Laura, and Bryan; Mark (Kim) Van Abel and their daughter Lauren; Amy (Bill) Sarles and their daughters Molly, Megan, and Emily; Craig (Mary) Van Abel and their sons Joshua and Nicholas. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bert in 1946, brothers Maurice (Hazel) Campbell, Alban (Rachel) Campbell, Harold Campbell, Howard (Gertrude) Campbell, and Willard Campbell; and by sisters Winifred (Charles) Joyce, Olive (John) Milton, Sadie Campbell, and Ruth (Tom) Campbell.
The funeral liturgy for Mary will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, February 1, 2002 at ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Hollandtown with Fr. Jack Mullarkey officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 9 AM until the hour of the liturgy
