Mary Agnes Sheldon “Shelly” Green
(Mrs. John W. Green)
Appleton
Died January 13, 2001. She was born March 23, 1919, daughter of the late Charles and Agnes Sheldon. Mary was raised in Shorewood, Wisconsin. She attended Carroll College and graduated from Lawrence University in 1940 with a degree in music. She met Dr. John W. Green, who was a professor at the Institute of Paper Chemistry, in 1940 and they were married July 1, 1942. They were happily married for 56 years and the mainstay of their lives was the faith they shared within the All Saints Episcopal Church of Appleton. Mary was instrumental in starting a Wednesday morning Prayer Group at All Saints. Mary and John shared many interests including skiing, camping, canoeing, birdwatching, model railroading, golfing at Riverview Country Club, Seymour and Shorewood Historical Societies, and the Republican Party. Many Appleton residents will remember their friendly greetings as Mary walked John to work at the Institute each day. Mary was active in numerous community organizations including Chapter B PEO Sisterhood, the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, the Wednesday (literary) Club, and the American Red Cross. She was also an ardent musician and served as church organist. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her husband John. She is survived by two goddaughters and their families; Cathie Leaf Erickson (Gary) of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Grace Butler Sheely (Rick) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a brother-in-law, Nicholas Bleeker Green, Royce City, Texas; a sister-in-law, Mary Seymour Green, Pennsylvania; nieces, nephews, and many caring friends and neighbors. Friends and family thank the dedicated staff at Golden Homes for the loving care they gave Mary and John. Visitation will be at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 20 followed by a memorial service at 11:30 AM at ALL SAINTS EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 400 E.
