Marvin W. Hinzman
March 9, 1937 – December 30, 2006
Marv loved food; Chocolate with nuts, apple pie with cheese, bread with gravy, and fish (without lemon). Not only was he a joyful eater, he was a formidable cook as well. Always loved to have friends and family share whatever he caught, cooked, or grilled. Marv spent a lifetime hunting and fishing and participating in sports.
Born in Appleton, Marv grew up in town sometimes spending summers in the Shawano and Gresham areas where he was known as “Butch”. He graduated from Appleton High School (now West) in 1955. He spent a brief time at a junior college in Northern Iowa and eventually
joined the Air Force where he served as an air traffic controller stationed in Alaska. After the service, Marv married Nancy Krieck in January of 1959 and had two children Todd (b. 1960) and Tara (b. 1964).
Marv worked in Appleton at Wichmann’s Furniture, Prange’s Department Store, Chappie’s Sporting Goods in the Valley Fair Mall and Lake School and Office Supply.
In 1989 Marv moved to Denver, Colorado where he and Nancy owned a short-lived “learning center” for school age children. The couple
divorced in 1990 and after working several years in King Soopers grocery chain, Marv retired and moved back to Appleton. During his retirement Marvin spent time caring for his father Walter, who passed away earlier this year, and his mother Caroline who currently resides at Century Oaks in Darboy. Marvin became fast friends with everyone he’d meet treating waitresses and executives, acquaintances and family all with simple genuine charm. He had good manners, questionable taste and never told an off color joke unless it was funny.
In the last couple years his pace had slowed due to his reduced lung capacity yet, all of his days were spent living and doing the things he loved. The day before he died Marvin went bowling, and took his mother out to eat.
Marvin is survived by his grandchildren, Katherine, Robert, and Amanda, his son, Todd; his daughter Tara Lynn; his mother Caroline and, Donna Schuh.
Funeral services for Marvin will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 2007, at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 East Franklin Street. Interment will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. Thursday until the time of services at the church.
