Marty Conrad, age 87 of Kimberly, passed away at St. Paul Villa in Kaukauna on Saturday morning, January 20, 2018. Marty was born at home in Combined Locks on April 25, 1930, son of the late Lambert and Christina (Vander Zandt) Coenraad. On June 17 of 1953, he married Joan Johnson at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Kimberly. For over forty years, Marty was employed by Thilmany Pulp and Paper in Kaukauna. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Army, and was awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Korean Service Medal, 3 Bronze Stars, and the Japanese Occupation Medal. He was a longtime and active member of the William Verhagen Post #60 of the American Legion and their Honor Guard.
Marty was a man with a strong faith, and was a faithful member of Holy Spirit Parish in Kimberly where he previously volunteered both at the church and the school. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, participated in the Cross and Crown Prayer Group, enjoyed playing Santa Claus for the children, following the Packers (through the good and lean years), and keeping up his immaculate yard and garden. He was also gifted in music, played the accordion and could play a keyboard by ear. Many will remember Marty for his generosity – he was always there to help a friend, neighbor, or family member in need. His generosity and good deeds will be his legacy.
Marty is survived by two daughters: Cindy (Mark) Antonie of Madison and Sandy (Dale) Oudenhoven of Little Chute; a grandson: Zack Antonie; three sisters: Geraldine Fahrenkrug, Wilma Weyenberg, and Theresa (Roy) Vanden Heuvel; a sister-in-law: Lorrie (Tom) Wildenberg, as well as many nieces and nephews. Marty was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joan in 2012, his in-laws John “Jack” and Cena Johnson, sisters Alice (George) Subert, Gertrude (Dick) Grieshaber, Josephine (Dale) Seefeldt, and Harriet (Marty) Vande Hey; and a brother: Chris (Janie) Coenraad.
The funeral liturgy for Marty will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH – HOLY NAME CHURCH, 600 E. Kimberly Avenue in Kimberly, with Fr. Robert Kollath officiating. Military honors will follow the service, and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the church on Thursday morning from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to everyone at St. Paul Elder Services and their Rehab Unit, The Villa, and St. Paul Hospice. We will never forget the tender and loving care provided to our dad during his time with you.
