Marian M. Maas-Smits, Menasha, on July 18, 2018, three days shy of her 92nd birthday, went to our heavenly Father on a beautiful sunny day. She was born July 21, 1926 daughter of the late Bernard and Mary (Spilski) Konetzke. She married Harold F. “Tartar” Maas on September 30, 1950. They had almost 21 years together, raising two daughters. He preceded her in death in 1971.
Marian had worked 17 years in the office for George Banta Co., until her retirement in 1983. In 1984, she married James V. Smits. They enjoyed four years of marriage before his death in 1988.
During her lifetime, Marian experienced many travels with family and friends, including trips to European countries. She had a talent for sewing and upholstering. She enjoyed golfing and playing cards. For fifty years she was a member of the Ladies Elks Club of Menasha. Marian endured many challenges during her life, but she always remained a strong-willed individual.
Survived by daughters: Patricia (Thomas) Jansen and Connie (Timothy) Greunke; grandchildren: Nicole (Bryan) Hoerning, Connor Jansen, Kayla (fiancé Mike Lefler) Greunke and Jake Greunke; great grandchildren: Austin and Addison Hoerning; stepchildren: Susan (William) Dwyer, Steve (Rebecca) Smits; step grandchildren: Kevin and Timothy Dwyer, Emily Smits. She is further survived by her sister, Rosalie Schramm; brother, Kenneth (Paula) Konetzke; sisters-in-law: Carol Konetzke and Jean Konetzke.
She was preceded in death by her husbands: Harold Maas and James Smits; sister, Virginia (Donald) Flanigan; brothers: Norbert (Margaret) Konetzke, James Konetzke and Bernard Konetzke; brother-in-law, Gene Schramm.
The memorial mass for Marian will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at St. Bernard Catholic Church (1617 W. Pine St., Appleton) with Fr. Amal Roche officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Marian’s name.
