Maria “Mary” Johanna (DenDekker) Somers, died Tuesday November 15, 2022 at the age of 95, following a brief illness. Mary was born December 23, 1926, the daughter of the late Martinus and Hendrieka (vanKuyk) DenDekker. Mary wed Peter Somers on October 1, 1952, and they built a life and raised a family in Kimberly.
Mary loved her family and shared her sense of humor, her get-it-done attitude, her zest for life, her faith and her gift of giving to their 8 children. She touched the lives of so many people. Her infectious demeanor brought smiles to all she would encounter.
She shared her many talents and joys with all. She especially enjoyed her three S’s! Shoes, sewing and socializing! An avid gardener, she taught her children about growing vegetables and making applesauce (with the twirl-peeled apples!).
She was also a volunteer throughout her life, and was very involved in the CCD course for special needs individuals as well as a member and integral part of the volunteer core of Holy Spirit Church. Mary lived a faith-filled life that overflowed in her giggles, enthusiasm and the love she showed each and every person she met.
Mary is survived by her children: Nancy (Bill) Preston, Harriet (Randy) Eick, Adrian (Jenni) Somers, Peter J. Somers, David (Joy Marcus) Somers, Maria (Bruce White) Somers and Lisa (Eric Bigelow) Hartjes. She is also loved and missed by 18 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Greeting her at the gates of Heaven were her husband Peter, her son Marty, her parents as well as her 13 siblings.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday November 19, 2022, at 11:00am at Holy Spirit Parish, 620 E Kimberly Ave, Kimberly WI. Friends and family may gather at the church from 9:00am until the start of mass. She will be laid to rest at Holy Name Cemetery in Kimberly immediately following the services.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Special Olympics Wisconsin, The Alzheimers Association or TheArc in Mary’s name.
We have to hold onto the memories that make us smile.
