Marcella "Marcy" A. Hurley-Campshure (Geenen)
Marcella “Marcy” A. Hurley-Campshure (Geenen), 104, passed away on May 12, 2024.
Marcy was born in Freedom, Wisconsin, the daughter of William and Rose (Calnin) Geenen, and later moved to Appleton, where she attended Appleton High School. She married Owen Hurley in 1947 and they raised three children together until his passing in 1971. Marcy then married Carlton “Cully” Campshure in 1974 and they were together until his passing in 1997.
Marcy was a dedicated and loving mother. While raising a family, she worked very hard to make sure her children had a good life and could attend college. Over the years, she worked several jobs including as a clerk at her brother Clem’s grocery store, at Appleton Coated Paper Company, where she met Owen, and as an accountant for a furniture store and at different times for three auto dealerships. She was a quiet and modest but very strong woman, taking comfort in living a simple yet very accomplished life. Anyone who ever met her liked her. When you ever asked anybody about Marcy, they would simply say, “What a wonderful woman!”
Marcy hosted many laugh-filled family events at her lake home in Menasha where she lived for over 40 years. Her children and grandchildren spent many weekends there enjoying her company, humor and great cooking while playing games and exchanging gifts. She always made sure everyone was happy and comfortable.
Marcy also was a talented seamstress and sewer. She enjoyed keeping busy with all kinds of different projects. She was a fantastic baker and was very social. Outside of her family life, she spent her time with the sewing club, golfing, card club, and with a luncheon group made up of old school friends some of whom were friends since kindergarten.
Marcy is preceded in death by her two husbands, Owen Hurley and Cully Campshure; parents, William and Rose Geenen; siblings, John (Arline) Geenen, Brother William Geenen, Clem (Renee) Geenen, Kathleen (John) Thomsyck; and daughter-in-law, Linda Hurley.
Marcy is survived by her children, Sandy Hurley, Tom (Laura Lee Ganske) Hurley, and Bill (Diane) Hurley; four grandchildren, Paul Hurley, Shelley (Dan) Van Hoof, Ryan (Carly) Hurley, and Kristin (Kevin) Wait; 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and family.
A funeral liturgy will be held on Saturday, May 25, at 11:00 AM, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 404 W. Lawrence St, Appleton. A visitation will be held prior beginning at 9:30 AM until the time of service.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Aspire Senior Living and ThedaCare at Home Hospice, and especially to Kelly Kortz, who was a caring and compassionate caregiver and friend to Marcy for over four years.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marcy’s name to The Senior Friendship Centers, which were founded by Marcy’s brother, Brother William Geenen, in Sarasota, Florida. Brother Geenen was a member of the Congregation of the Holy Cross (C.S.C.). Marcy was proud of him and all he accomplished in serving older adults and helping them discover ways to connect. Donations can be made at www.friendshipcenters.org/donate-today or by sending them to: Senior Friendship Centers, 1888 Brother Geenen Way, Sarasota, Fl. 34236. Attn: Erin McLeod.
