Marcy Derks, age 73, passed away Sunday December 11, 2005 at Brewster Village in Appleton. Marcy was born in Dale on November 18, 1932, daughter of the late Richard and Elsie (Schimmelpfenning) Sommers. She graduated from Appleton High School in 1950, and as a young woman worked at both the Appleton and Kaukauna telephone companies. Marcy married Robert Derks on August 23, 1952. After the children were grown, Marcy returned to work, and was a telephone secretary at TelSec for fifteen years, and also worked as a housekeeper at Tanner School in Kaukauna. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and playing cards.
Marcy is survived by her husband: Robert Derks of Kimberly; five daughters: Susan (Tom) Collins of Hermosa, South Dakota; Sandra (Joseph) Smith of Darboy; Sara (Lorman) Anderson of Neenah; MSG Vicki Derks of Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi; and Conni (Brian) Heiting of the town of Clayton; four sons: Richard (Lynn) Derks of Appleton; Thomas Derks of Hortonville; Robert Derks of Kaukauna; and James Derks of Appleton; a daughter-in-law: Janice Derks of Menasha; nineteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mildred Hafeman of Appleton and Ione (Howard) Kersten of Shawano; three brothers-in-law: Bill (Mary) Derks of Combined Locks; John (Val) Derks of England; and Tom (Sandy) Derks of Kimberly; and a sister-in-law: Carol Derks of Kaukauna. Marcy was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughters Shirley and Sharon Derks, a son Jerry Derks in 1999, a daughter-in-law Kris Derks in 2002, a sister Pearl (Ervin) Schydizk, brothers Richard Sommers, Norman Sommers, and Ted Sommers; brothers-in-law Robert Hafeman, Dan Derks, and Ronald and Donald Derks; and Robert’s parents William and Frances (Van Dyke) Derks.
The funeral service for Marcy will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 15, 2005 at the funeral home chapel with Sr. Carol Haanen, A.N.G. officiating. Inurnment will be at Holy Name Cemetery, Kimberly. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 PM until the hour of the service. A memorial fund in Marcy’s name has been established.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the entire staff at the Alzheimer’s Unit at Brewster Village. Marcy had resided there the past four years, and you made her feel so much at home. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
