Age 85, passed away on September 20, 2005. He was born in Sioux Falls, SD on November 9, 1919. Ray served in the Army Air Corp during WWII in North Africa and Europe, earning the Distinguished Unit Badge for bravery. After serving his country, he married Lyla Bunton in Waukegan, IL on April 4, 1945. He was employed at Appleton Machine for 29 years and retired in 1985. Ray enjoyed golf, bowling and skunking his grandchildren at cribbage.

Ray is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lyla; children: Martin Hawkinson of Las Vegas, NV; Ronald Hawkinson of Sherwood and his children Samantha and Ryan, and Lyla Rae (Brian) Goerl of Green Bay and their children Lyla Miranda and Ariel; and brother, Gustave Baporis. Ray is preceded in death by his son Raymond; and brothers: Tom Baporis and Leon Baporis.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2005, at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Tri-County Chapel, 3212 S. Oneida St. Appleton, with Rev Timothy L. Kinney officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. The committal will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park following the funeral service.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff at St. Paul Home for the tremendous care and compassion they gave to Ray.
