Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Lorraine E. Schroeder, age 99, went to her eternal home on November 30, 2022. Lorraine was born March 2, 1923, in Appleton to the late Fred and Edna (Peters) Kasten. She grew up on the family farm in Freedom and graduated from Freedom High School. After high school she worked at Zwicker Knitting Mill in Appleton and was proud to be the star pitcher for the local women’s softball team. She married Harold Schroeder on May 15, 1948, at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton. She was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Appleton, where she and Harold volunteered custodial services for 17 years. She also enjoyed going to Bible studies and being a member of the church quilting group.
Lorraine’s faith and family always came first in her life. As a young girl she helped take care of her younger siblings, even if she had to put them into the calf pen to keep them safe while she did her chores in the barn. Her husband, children and grandchildren were the most important things in her life. She devoted herself to taking care of them first and never let them leave the house without feeding them and making sure they were warmly dressed. “She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed.” -Proverbs 31:27-28
Lorraine is survived by her children Donna Hjorth of DePere, Richard (Tracy) Schroeder of Wild Rose and Kathy Schaefer of Neenah. She is further survived by granddaughters: Amanda (Nik) Krueger and their children Braxton and Joplin, and Beth (James) Saliger and their children Joslyn, Landen, Rayne, Hayley and Thea as well as siblings Shirley Rasmussen and Marvin Kasten and sister-in-law Marlene Schroeder. Many nieces, nephews and friends will also mourn her passing.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, infant children Charles and Wendy, brother Wilbert Kasten, sister Marcille Moreau as well as many brothers and sisters in law.
A funeral service for Lorraine will be held on Tuesday December 6, 2022, at 3:00pm at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N Superior Street, Appleton. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home from 1:00pm until the start of the service. Lorraine will be laid to rest at Highland Memorial Park.
