Levi Mayer, age 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 14, 2008 after a lengthy battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Levi was born in Appleton on July 17, 1925 to the late Otto and Emma (Braun) Mayer. He was a 1942 graduate of Appleton West High School, and from 1943 until 1945 served his country as a member of the United States Army. He was a member of the 30th Infantry Military Police, and was stationed in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. On June 12, 1948 married the former Margaret Spreeman of Suring. For thirty-four years, Levi was employed by Wisconsin Power Company, now WeEnergies. Following his retirement he was an active volunteer at the Appleton Medical Center Groth Surgical Center as well as in the G.I. Lab. He loved trains, woodworking, and was a longtime and faithful member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church.
Levi is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years: Margaret Mayer; two children: Emmy (Dawn Barron) Mayer and Allan (Diana) Mayer; a very special granddaughter: Renee (Mel) Wills; three brothers-in-law: Verlyn (Beulah) Spreeman, Eugene (Della) Spreeman, and William Spreeman, Jr.; three sisters-in-law: Elaine Schmidt, Shirley Baeten, and Marie Spreeman; by Millie, the family dog, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother Laura (nee Werner) Mayer; brothers Larry and Joseph Mayer; sisters-in-law: Althea (Floyd) Peters, Jean Spreeman, Elaine Spreeman and Marcella Spreeman (Margaret's twin sister); brothers-in-law Carlyle Spreeman, Earl (Sally) Spreeman, Eugene Baeten, and John “Jack” Schmidt.
The Christian Funeral for Levi will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 18, 2008 at ST. JOHN EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, Highway 47 North of Appleton, with Rev. Jeffrey Suhr officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday morning from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Levi's name.
