Leora Hooyman, age 96, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2019, just three weeks shy of turning 97. Following her high school graduation. she married Gerald Hooyman on April 26, 1941 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Appleton; he preceded her in death in 2004.
Leora was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and enjoyed bowling, picnics in the park, cookouts, birthday parties, and other special events with family, as well as playing bingo every week. Being a former employee of Maritz Marketing, regular coffee with co-workers and friends always brought her joy.
She is survived by six children: Judith (Denny) Noie of Appleton, Jerry Hooyman of Racine, Diane (Don Hagany) Hopfensperger of Appleton, Mary Ellen Bolland of Madison, Michael (Resa) Hooyman of Menasha, and Susan (Phil) Eldredge of Woodbury, Minnesota. She will be dearly missed by eighteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and one on the way.Leora was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jerry, as well as her sisters and brothers: Myrtle (Wilbur) Kositzke, Vernice (Roland) Choudoir, Carlon “Bud” Dreier, and Allan (Vera) Dreier.
The funeral service for Leora will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Faith Lutheran Church, located at 601 E. Glendale Avenue in Appleton, with Rev. Daniel Thews officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to gather at the church on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service.
Leora will forever be remembered as a kind and gentle soul who judged no one and was loved by everyone. She had a special way about her, that many referred to as classy, sassy, and selfless. We hope you remember our mom – for the special lady she was – in the same way that we do. She spent nearly one hundred years on this earth, but that is but the twinkling of an eye when compared to the joys of heaven she has now been blessed with. We love you mom. Rest peacefully until we see you again.
The family would like to extend their love and thanks to the special angels and caregivers at New Perspectives in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, where our mom recently resided. We will be forever grateful for all you have done for all of us.
