Age 78, was born to eternal life on Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina following a sudden stroke. He was born on August 17, 1925 in West Allis, Wisconsin the son of the late John and Lisetta (Samp) Hetzel. He graduated from Nathan Hale High School in West Allis, Wisconsin in 1943. He served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II. On September 14, 1946 he married Lillian Gest at St. Martini Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. He earned his Associate Degree in Engineering. Leonard and Lillian enjoyed wintering in Sun City Arizona for ten years after retirement. He enjoyed singing in the choir at Paradise Resort in Arizona. He was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Appleton and enjoyed singing in the choir at Faith. Leonard was a past member of McDowell Male Chorus.
He is survived by his wife Lillian of Appleton, his children: Judith Ann (Daniel) Lucas of Appleton, Carol Hetzel of Appleton, Mary Ellen (Douglas) Pomerenke of Neenah, David (Terri) Hetzel of Asheville, North Carolina, and Lori Rae Hetzel-Ebben (Paul) of Lexington, Kentucky; and his grandchildren Sarah, Anne, and Emily Lucas; Charles, Angela, and Shaun Pomerenke; Tess, Jesse, and Eva Hetzel; and Hannah Hetzel-Ebben; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Edwin Hetzel, and his parents.
A funeral service for Leonard will be conducted on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at 11:00 AM at FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 601 East Glendale Avenue, with the Rev. Paul Brinkman officiating. Interment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established for the music department at Faith Lutheran Church.
