Age 71, died unexpectedly, Sunday morning, June 9, 2002. She was born July 10, 1930, to the late William and Nellie (Hubers) Derkes, in Little Chute and had been an area resident all of her life. Leona married Claire R. Baumann, on August 10, 1950, at St. John Catholic Church, Little Chute. She was well known for her baking, especially her breads, for the parish bake sale, and chocolate chip cookies. She’ll always be remembered for putting others needs before hers and her willingness to help others. She enjoyed volunteering at St. Thomas More by doing mailings and helping Sister Betty with religious education projects. She and Claire enjoyed dancing, especially polka and square dancing. Leona was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic church and a former member of the Ladies of the Moose.
She will be deeply missed by her husband, Claire R. Baumann; two daughters, Debbie S. Hoffmann, Sheboygan; Nancy A. Baumann, Appleton; six grandchildren, twins, Andrew and Anthony and his fiancee, Michelle, Jennifer, Jacqueline, Jessica and Ian; a sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Bill Glasheen, Kimberly; a longtime family friend, Darwin R. Daniels, Appleton; a favorite godson, Joseph Glasheen; her best friend Virginia Vandenberg, Arizona; four brothers-in-law, Carl (Eileen) Baumann, Nicholas (Jean) Baumann, Raymond (Virginia) Baumann, Henry (Clara) Baumann; six sisters-in-law, Gertrude (Emmett) Decker, Blanche Strelka, Marie (Eugene) Bushman, Betty Weyers, Jeanette Baumann, Marion Baumann; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marie (Ed) Rosner, two brothers, Peter (Edna) Derkes, Elmer Derkes, five brothers-in-law, Joseph, Clement, Baby George Baumann, Eugene Weyers, Roy Bogenshutz, Richard Strelka and a sister-in-law, Baby Marie Therese.
The funeral liturgy for Leona will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, June 13, 2002, at ST. THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1810 North McDonald Street, with Father Gerald R. Falk officiating. Burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 pm Wednesday and on Thursday at the church, from 9:30 am until the time of the mass. A memorial fund is being established.

We are so lucky to have had you for our mother and friend. We never thought you would leave us so suddenly. You are now at peace, but you’ll remain in our hearts forever.
