Age 82, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at the Hospice at Cherry Meadows. She was born on May 9, 1920 in Milwaukee, the daughter of the late Richard and Bertha (Meyer) Henkey. On October 2, 1944 she married Simon Van Steen in Milwaukee. In 1961 they moved to Appleton when they purchased a Ford automobile dealership which became Van Steen Motors. Penny was a member of the fraternal organization PEO. She also volunteered at Appleton Medical Center, and was a member of Kings Daughters. Penny led a full and rich life and her greatest joy was the friends she made over the many years.
She is survived by her daughter Mary (James) Poor of Yakima, Washington; her sisters-in-law Ione Van Steen and Vi Henkey both of Milwaukee; nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friend and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband Simon, and her brother Kenneth Henkey.
A memorial service will conducted on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Wichmann Funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick Twomey officiating. Private entombment will take place at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, Wisconsin. The family will greet friends on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established for the Hospice at Cherry Meadows.
The family wishes to express their most sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff and volunteers at the Hospice at Cherry Meadows for their thoughtful dedication while caring for Penny.
