Age 92, passed away in Appleton on Sunday, September 14, 2003. She was born on April 6, 1911 in Chicago, daughter of the late Patrick and Catheryn (Barrett) McKeon. On June 24, 1939 she married George Knapstein in Chicago. Kate was proud to volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul for many years. She was a devoted volunteer and charter member of St. Bernard Catholic Church as well as serving with the Christian Mothers Society at St. Bernards and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Before she was married, Kate worked at the ticket agency at the Sherman Hotel in Chicago and loved to share stories about her experiences serving Al Capone. She laughingly said he was a tipper.

Kate is survived by five children: Catherine (Robert) Grothe of Milwaukee, Barbara Collins of Lombard, IL; George (Jean) Knapstein of Appleton, Ann (Dan) Knapstein-Bier of Madison, James (Susan) Knapstein of Appleton; grandchildren: John and Michael Collins, Matthew and Sarah Knapstein, Kari Schultz, Kelly Knapstein, and Kaitlin Beir; and a great grandson, Taylor Knapstein.

Kate is preceded in death by her husband George, her parents, brothers: Vincent and Stanley Mc Keon, sisters: Frances Laycock, Jean Cashion and Mary Frawley; and a son-in-law, Bob Collins.

The funeral liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 West Pine Street, Appleton, with Fr. John Bergstadt officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Most Precious Blood Cemetery, New London.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society would be appreciated.
