Joyce V. Nieuwenhuis

April 6, 1927 — June 18, 2002

Age 75, passed away at her home on Tuesday, June 18, 2002, surrounded by her family, following a courageous six-year battle with cancer. Joyce was born in Kimberly on April 6, 1927, daughter of the late August and Leona (Lorge) Homman. She was proud to have been the valedictorian of the Kimberly High School class of 1945. On February 1, 1947, she married Gene Nieuwenhuis at Holy Name Church in Kimberly; he survives. For over twenty five years, Joyce was employed as a medical assistant in the office of Dr. Jack G. Anderson, retiring in 1988. She enjoyed camping, traveling, and knitting and crocheting afghans and slippers for her grandchildren. She also looked forward to an occasional trip to the casino. She and Gene also kept busy by making rosaries for the first communicants at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay.

Joyce was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will be sadly missed by her husband of fifty-five years: Gene Nieuwenhuis of Kimberly; two daughters: Linda (Joel) Barkin of Appleton and Jean Gerrits of Kimberly and her special friend Mike Maas; two sons: David (Marilyn) Nieuwenhuis of Roscoe, Illinois and Don (Beth) Nieuwenhuis of Darboy; twelve grandchildren: Sarah Barkin of Palo Alto, California and her fiancé Jim Metcalf; David Barkin of Madison; Bret (Yolanda) Gerrits of Kaukauna; Chad (Jennifer) Gerrits of Kimberly; Craig (Darci) Gerrits of Kaukauna; John (Nanette) Gerrits of Kimberly; Jason Nieuwenhuis of Tulsa, Oklahoma and his fiancee Amy Beier; Tracy Nieuwenhuis of Tampa, Florida; Kim Patenode of Roscoe, Illinois; Dan

Nieuwenhuis of Darboy; Jeff Nieuwenhuis of Darboy; and Michelle Nieuwenhuis of Darboy; six great-grandchildren: Bryce and Travis Gerrits; Hunter and Spencer Gerrits; and Jaida and Delainey Gerrits; a sister: Ione (Edward) Dorn of Appleton; four sisters-in-law: Edith Fuss of Appleton; Helen (Kenneth) Guyette of Appleton; Agnes Nysse of Appleton; Elaine Homman of Kimberly. Joyce was preceded in death by brothers Duane Homman and Lyle Homman, and by brothers-in-law Willard Nysse, Melvin Fuss, and Francis Nieuwenhuis.

The funeral liturgy for Joyce will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 21, 2002 at HOLY NAME CATHOLIC CHURCH, 600 E. Kimberly Avenue in Kimberly with Fr. David Schmidt officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 9:30 AM until the hour of the service. A memorial fund has been established in Joyce’s name.

Mom and Grandma: Thank you for your victory in your battle with cancer. You blessed us in your fight by being there for our weddings, the birth your great-grandchildren, and all of our special events. You were the best mother, never complained, and gave us the freedom to become who we are.
