Age 77, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Appleton Medical Center. Joyce was born on April 20, 1924, in Milwaukee to the late Joseph and Lillian (Tennessen) Kohl. She married Jerome M. Toonen, Sr. on April 30, 1946; he preceded her in death on June 29, 1985. Joyce was a longtime member of Christian Mothers at St. Therese Catholic Church, was the Good Cheer Chairman, an area Girl Scout leader and a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed needlework and was an avid book reader. Joyce will be dearly missed by her family, but will go lovingly into the arms of her husband and son. Survivors include her daughter, Catherine (John) Wilharms, Appleton; John Toonen, Appleton; her daughter-in-law, Judy (Kevin) Buchanan; her grandchildren, Julie Wilharms (fiance, Gary Gonnering, New London; Brian (Terri) Wilharms, Appleton; Michelle Martin, Appleton; Jennifer Toonen, Appleton; David Toonen, Menasha; Steven Toonen, Menasha; her great grandson, Thomas Wilharms and great granddaughter, Karma Brooks; her sisters-in-law, Rita Chapelle, Appleton; Toni (Murch) Lambie, Appleton; Vi Toonen, Appleton; her brother-in-law, Leo Tiedt, Madison, and her special friends Doug and Lani. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Jerry “Butch” Toonen; her brother Richard (Donna) Kohl; her sister-in-law, Betty Tiedt; her brothers-in-law, Bob Chapelle, Joseph Van Domelen, Harold (Pat) Toonen and Tom Toonen, The Funeral Liturgy will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, Wisconsin Avenue at Morrison Street, Appleton. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again directly at the church on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Franciscan Care Center for their loving care.
