Formerly of Freedom

Age 91, went to meet her Lord on April 20, 2002, in Appleton. She was born to the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Hietpas) Van Handel on February 16, 1911, in the Township of Vandenbroek. She married Martin Van Asten in Little Chute on November 19, 1936. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage together. She was a loving mother, grandmother and wife who was a very generous and caring provider for her family. She will always be remembered for her smile and her year’s of Christmas gatherings for four generations of her family. Josephine enjoyed spending time with her in-laws, especially during a game of cards.

Josephine is survived by her husband Martin, six sons: Merlin (Janice) Van Asten of Freedom, Marvin (Mary) Van Asten of Freedom, Carl (Sharon) Van Asten of Appleton, Wayne (Ann) Van Asten of Appleton, Lyle Van Asten and special friend Bette Handel of Wrightstown, and Jack (Pauline) Van Asten of Freedom; two daughters: Delores (Ronald) Mischler of Kaukauna and Lois (Lloyd) Schuessler of Kaukauna; 33 grandchildren and 31 greatgrandchildren; two brothers: Earl Van Handel of Little Chute and Raymond (Margaret) Van Handel of Little Chute; three sisters: Anna Paalman of Kimberly, Marth (Ray) Woldt of Appleton, and Barbara (Anthony) Sprague of Kimberly.

Josephine is preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter Carol, three grandchildren; two sisters: Cora Van Handel and infant Barbara; two brothers: Raymond Van Handel, Ed (Blache) Van Handel, and infant Theodore Van Handel; two sisters-in-law: Audrey Van Handel and Josephine Micke; and three brothers-in-law: Joe Paalman, Buzz Petersen and Leo Vander Heiden.

The funeral liturgy will be at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, N4088 County Trunk E, Freedom, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday, April 22, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at the parish cemetery after the liturgy.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Parkside Care Center and to Appleton Medical Center for their good care of Josephine and her family.

A memorial fund is being established.
