Age 78, passed away at his home on Monday, November 5, 2001, following a brief illness. Joe was born July 19, 1923, in Kimberly, son of the late Theodore and Petronella (Vander Heiden) Vanden Boogard. From 1942 to 1946, he served his county as a member of the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific Arena. On May 31, 1947, he married the former Mary Van Vreede in Combined Locks; she survives. For nearly forty years, Joe was employed by the Wisconsin Wire Works in Appleton. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and horseshoe player. He and Mary enjoyed travel, camping with friends, and square dancing. Many will remember Joe for the many pieces of furniture he built for his children and grandchildren. Joe was a talented carpenter, and at the age of seventy-two embarked on an ambitious project – with the help of his family, he built a new home.
He is survived by his wife: Mary Vanden Boogard of Darboy; eight children: Patricia “Trish” (Alan) Erickson of Fond du Lac, Judy (David) Delain of Luxemburg, Jim (Kathy) Vanden Boogard of DePere, Mark “Boogs” (Sue) Vanden Boogard of Darboy, Anne Westbrook of Neenah, John “Rocky” (Mary) Vanden Boogard of Appleton, Paul (Susan) Vanden Boogard of Kimberly, and Dan Vanden Boogard of Menomonee Falls; twenty-two grandchildren: Michelle (Brian) Behnke, Curtis Erickson, Craig Erickson, Kisha Delain, Eric (Sheryl) Delain, Megan Delain, Kimberly Delain, Mindy Vanden Boogard, Jacob Vanden Boogard, Richard Vanden Boogard, Joe Vanden Boogard, Adam Vanden Boogard, Kari Vanden Boogard, Bret Vanden Boogard, Jon Westbrook, Aaron Westbrook, Jenny Vanden Boogard, Andy Vanden Boogard, Scott Vanden Boogard, Amanda Hoffmann, Joshua Vanden Boogard, and Ciara Vanden Boogard; two great-grandchildren: Savanna Furcho and Nicholas Behnke; two brothers: Alois (Mary) Vanden Boogard of Darboy and Eugene (Joanne) Vanden Boogard of Kimberly; two sisters: Dorothy Malone of Kimberly and Margaret (Eugene) Verstegen of Menasha; three brothers-in-law: Norbert (Millie) Van Vreede of New Jersey, Cyril (Sally) Van Vreede of Menasha, and Cletus (Verna) Van Vreede of Iowa. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Richard, and brothers-in-law Jim Malone, John (Sylvia) Van Vreede, and Roger Van Vreede.
The funeral liturgy for Joe will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, November 8, 2001 at HOLY NAME CATHOLIC CHURCH, 600 E. Kimberly Avenue in Kimberly with Rev. Dennis Bergsbaken officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 – 8 PM and again at the church on Thursday from 11 AM until the hour of the service. There will be a parish prayer and scripture service at 7 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
