Joseph ''Choc'' Van Daalwyk

Age 78, died peacefully early Monday morning, October 15, 2001. Joe was born on September 14, 1923, in Kimberly, son of the late Jacob and Minnie (Rietveld) Van Daalwyk. Joe was united in marriage to Charlotte M. Brum on May 3, 1947. The always happy couple shared fifty-three love filled years together.

Joe, a lifelong member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, spent his adult life as a devoted husband and father of six children. During World War II, Joe served the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He was very active in the Explorer Scouts and Boy Scouts for 25 years and shared his love of camping and fishing with his family starting with tents and ending with their home-away-from-home on Mary Lake in Townsend, WI.

“Choc” was an active member for his community and was a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus council #4489. He was a member of Golden K – Heart of the Valley, and was a member of the American Legion #60. Joe also served for two terms as a school board member for the Kimberly schools district. Upon returning from Europe after the war, Joe worked for Kimberly Clark Corporation and continued with Mid-Tec Paper until his retirement in 1985. He served as Union President for the Paper Workers Union during his time with Mid-Tec.

Joe will be remembered by his family and friends for his happy disposition, his loyalty to the Packers (through the good and bad years!), for being the master of all campfire songs, grandchild chauffeur extraordinaire, and everyone’s secret Santa!

He is survived by his children, Beverly Van Daalwyk, Appleton; Richard (Kathy) Van Daalwyk, Colfax; Nancy (Kurt) Grube, Appleton; Debbie Van Daalwyk, Hortonville; Dan (Linda Wereley) Van Daalwyk, New London; Kelly (Ernie) Gonzales, Appleton; nine grandchildren, Eric (Karen) Van Daalwyk, Colfax; Deana Van Daalwyk, New Richmond; Danielle Grube, Appleton; Rachel Van Daalwyk, Hortonville; Jeremiah Grube, Appleton; Zac Van Daalwyk, Hortonville; Rebecca Grube, Appleton; Angela and Nico Gonzales, Appleton; two step grandchildren, Steven (Kristina Bross) Wereley, West Lafayette, Indiana; and Leslie (David Thuecks) Wereley, New Holstein; three step great-grandchildren, Duncan, Sophia, and Linden Perkins; one twin sister Mary (James) Scagnelli, Atlanta, GA; one half sister Susan VanEvenhoven, Kaukauna. He was preceded in death by his soul mate and loving wife, Charlotte; his son, Jim; his brother, Jacob “Toby”, Appleton; and his sister, Harriet “Hattie” DeCoster.

The funeral liturgy for “Choc” will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 19, 2001 at HOLY NAME CATHOLIC CHURCH, 600 E. Kimberly Avenue with Msgr. Jim Vanden Hogen and Msgr. John Schuh officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 Р8 PM and again at the church on Friday from 10 AM until the hour of the liturgy. There will be a parish prayer and scripture service at the funeral home at 7 PM Thursday.

Joe’s immediate family sends thanks to all our friends, family and especially the staff and residents of Colony Oaks Care Center for the love and support given him through his prolonged illness. In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to complete a memorial garden at Colony Oaks Care Center in memory of Charlotte and Joe Van Daalwyk.
