Age 83, died Tuesday, August 19, 2003, at Century Oaks in Menasha. John was born on November 15, 1919, in Loyal, Wisconsin, to the late Gustav and Leona (Busch) Raether. He married Rosella Martzahl on October 7, 1939, in Appleton. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He proudly served his nation in the U.S. Navy. Following his service to his country, he farmed locally until becoming a carpenter. He enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting and could always be counted on for practical jokes. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Rosella; his son, Harvey (Janet) Raether, Menasha; his daughter, Mary (Lon) Allen, Clintonville; his son Jack (Debra) Raether, Appleton; his grandchildren, Sue (Richard) Carlson, Lynn Raether, Marny (David) Mincheff; Matthew Mischler; John and Jack Raether; his great grandchildren, Jonathon Carlson, Michael Carlson, Nicholas Carlson, Samuel Carlson, Nicholas Mincheff and Bran Mincheff. He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel; his sisters, Eleanor (Earl) Kachur, Ruth (John) Kuba, Sara (Carl Tank) Schreiber and Louise (Albert) Tank; and his brother, Walter (Viola) Raether; and his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2003, at RIVERVIEW EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 136 West Seymour Street, Appleton, with Rev. Dennis W. Belter officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home-Tri County Chapel, Menasha, on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again directly at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. A memorial has been established in his name to benefit the Riverview Ev. Lutheran Church Building Program.
