JACQUOT, JOHN W.
John Jacquot, of Appleton, age 85 years, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 with his family at his side. He was born August 16, 1921 in Neenah, the son of the late Wilbur and Louise (Losch) Jacquot. On August 26, 1942, he married the former Barbara Kraus. John served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942-1945.
After some primary schooling in Appleton he attended and graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tenn. Following a decision to not accept an offer of an appointment to the Annapolis Naval Academy he joined the Jacquot Cheese Company and also enrolled in the University of Wisconsin Extension School, where he met and started dating a saucy, five foot, dark haired, blue eyed, pretty girl named Barb, who he married two years later in 1942.
Later in the year, due to the War, he enlisted in the Signal Corps followed by a transfer to the Army Air Force. Basic training at Miami Beach, Florida, CTD (college training detachment) at the University of Pittsburgh, preflight at Maxwell Field, Alabama, Gunnery School at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada and Bombardier School at Carlsbad Air Force Base, New Mexico. After training and being commissioned as Lieutenant, he was selected to be an instructor and eventually a chief instructor.
Following the surrender of Japan, the base at Carlsbad was deactivated. The opportunity to continue in service was offered but declined and he was transferred to San Angelo, Texas to await order for discharge. After several weeks the orders arrived and discharge was from Truax Field, Madison, Wisconsin.
John returned to the family business. Several years later an attractive offer to purchase the business was made and the business was sold. He was retained as Branch Manager of the Appleton and Seymour operations. Years later the Buyer (Standard Brands, Inc.) decided to go out of the cheese business and closed down all cheese operations. John and his partners purchased the assembly plant in Appleton, established the Wisconsin Cheese Corporation and continued purchasing cheese from outlying factories, and grading and selling to several processors. Following several years of operation and a loss of market they decided to close the business.
After entering and working in the grocery business for several years, he took a correspondence accounting course. An opportunity opened with the USDA, Federal Milk Marketing Division and he was hired as an auditor. During his training he was enrolled at Ohio State University where he took and completed the Agriculture Economics Milk Pricing and Marketing Course. He was advanced to Senior Auditor and then to Audit Supervisor and Office Manager of the Northeast Wisconsin Division of the Chicago Regional Milk Marketing Order retiring in 1990 with 25 years of Federal Service.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 38 at Appleton, a 32nd Degree Mason with membership in Waverly Lodge at Appleton and the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory at Green Bay. John was also a member of the United Seniors Association.
