John T. Streur, age 88, of Appleton, died Sunday morning, October 22, 2006. He was born November 10, 1917, to the late John and Johanna (Vander Wielen) Streur, in Kimberly and had been an Appleton resident most of his life. John served with the U. S. Army from 1942 – 1945 in the European Theatre. He never forgot the early Depression years when he sold newspapers in Appleton at the age of 12. He made a few dollars a week and it went to help support his family, as did the money from the Appleton News Agency job he took at the age of 16. The business began to expand in the 1960’s and in the 1970’s the name was changed to Badger Periodical Distributors. Up to the last few weeks of his life, John, was at work everyday. He was very proud of the accomplishments he received such as: The Governors Small Business Award, awarded by Governor Tommy Thompson, Chamber Small Business Person of the Year in 1985, numerous outstanding book wholesaler awards, he was a director of the Outagamie Bank starting in 1984 and continued as a director through its successor banks including Wells Fargo, he was also a “25 Year Club” officer which is an industry charitable organization. John was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, the Oney Johnston-Edward Blessman American Legion Post #38, the Harvey Pierre VFW Post #2778 and the Appleton Elks Club #337.
John is survived by his wife of 21 years, Patricia (Hein) Streur; John’s children, William (Luann) Streur and their children, Nicole (Antoine) Tines and great grandson, Ethan, and Heather (Mark) DuPont; Thomas (Pamela) Streur and their children, Eric, Megan and Jason; Peggy (Carlos) Mendez and their children, Michael and Tara, all of Appleton area. He is further survived by Pat’s children, Cynthia (Buzz) Hempel and their son, Bradley; Sue (Amos) Cooper and their daughter, Claudia, all of Texas. His sisters, Gloria Kraus and Virginia Magnus, of Appleton, sisters-in-law, Mary Hinkens, Joan Hein, Trudy (Lee) Dunham; and a brother-in-law, Victor (Janiece) Hein; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 44 years, Helen, four sisters, one brother and one brother-in-law.
The funeral liturgy for John will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, October 27, 2006, at ST BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 West Pine Street, with Father Dennis Ryan and Reverend Jane Anderson officiating. Entombment will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 pm and on Friday at the church from 10:00 am, until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers memorial funds have been established for John’s favorite charities.
