Age 88, died unexpectedly, Thursday evening, January 8, 2004. He was born December 1, 1915, to the late John and Martina (VanDera) DeGroot, in Combined Locks and had been brought up in Minnesota. Jack served with the U. S. Army during WW II, in the European Theatre, where he received the Bronz Star. Following his marriage to Mary Ann Brunner, December 1, 1945, they moved to Kaukauna. J. D. was employed by Mertens Transportation Company for thirty years, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed listening to the Brewers games on his radio and playing sheepshead at 4:00 pm, daily, at Schouten Oil. John was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Kaukauna Electric City VFW Post #3319. Survivors include his special friend, Catherine “Florence” Weber and her family; his four sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Barbara DeGroot, Kaukauna; Lloyd and Patricia DeGroot, Kaukauna; Duane and Kay De Groot, Kimberly; Robert “Bones” and Mary DeGroot, Menasha; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Gary Resch, Menasha; Shirley Kruezer, Milwaukee; 18 grandchildren, Dawn (Randy) Paltzer, Alan (special friend, Stacy) DeGroot, Jennifer (special friend, Troy) DeGroot, Eric (special friend, Amy) DeGroot, Robert (Kerry) Van Nuland, Mark Van Nuland, Tracy Resch, James and Julie DeGroot, Jillian, Allison, Caitlin, Andrew and Jacob DeGroot, Crystle (special friend, Darryl) DeGroot, John DeGroot, Neeka and Reegan Cheslock; seven great grandchildren; seven brothers and five sisters-in-law, Francis and Eunice DeGroot, Kaukauna; Bill and Iva DeGroot, Spokane, WA; Tony and Marilyn DeGroot, Lakeville, MN; Myron and Ollie DeGroot, Fairbault, MN; Arthur DeGroot, Fairbault, MN; Leo DeGroot, Texas; Fred “Fritz” and Pam DeGroot, St. Joseph, MO; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Agnes and Ray Web, Fairbault, MN; Elizabeth and Bernard Sneva, St. Paul, MN; Rosella Wallace, New Mexico; and a special friend, Vernon Nabbefeldt, Seymour. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann (Brunner) DeGroot, in 1989, two grandsons, Gary Resch, Jr, Jason DeGroot, a sister, Martha(Leonard) Gillis, a son-in-law, Tom Kruezer, two sisters-in-law, Dorothy DeGroot and Phyllis DeGroot, a brother-in-law, Donald Wallace. The funeral liturgy for John will be held at 4:30 pm, Monday, January 12, 2004, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 209 Desnoyer Street, with Father Jack Mullarkey officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 2:30 pm, Monday until the time of the mass. A memorial fund is being established.
