Age 82, John died peacefully, Tuesday afternoon, September 30, 2003, at his home. He was born August 25, 1921, to the late William E. and Gladys (Watson) Disher in Windsor, Canada. He grew up in Iron Mountain, MI. and moved to Appleton in 1939, following his high school graduation and attended Lawrence University, where he was President of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. John served with the U. S. Army Quartermaster Corps from 1942 to 1945 in Europe where he received the Purple Heart, during the Battle of the Bulge.
He married Barbara Gene Boen, July 1948; she preceded him in death on November 29, 1990. John and his wife owned and operated the Campbell Stores in the Fox River Valley, for 35 years. He later married Mildred “Murph” Ryan, June 1993; she preceded him in death August 25, 1997. He was a member of the Lawrence Alumni Association, Northshore Country Club, Ridgeway Country Club and was very active in the community and the Chamber of Commerce. John was a loyal and classic man, an avid golfer and tennis player, and loved to sing. All who knew him liked him for his keen mind and sense of humor.
He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Chapman Brown, Los Angeles, CA; Marilyn Boen Disher, Albuquerque, NM; three grandsons, Austin, Adrian and Derrek Brown; his brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Phyllis Disher, Brookfield, WI; and his brother-in-law, Dr. James Robert (Dorothy) Boen, Hopkins, MN.
Funeral services for John will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 4, 2003 at the funeral home, with Father Arthur Kephart officiating. Burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 am, Saturday, until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.
