John Arthur Pagel

December 26, 1932 — June 11, 2021

John A. Pagel, age 88, of Menasha, passed away on June 11, 2021. John was born in Neenah, Wisconsin to Louis and Irma (Schoenrock) Pagel on December 26, 1932. On August 25, 1951, John married the former Hazel Cleveland.

He served his country honorably as a member of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the American Legion Post 152 where he served as Post Commander, Financial Officer and Chaplain. Dad was their #1 Go to Guy for Poppy Drives at Festival Foods in Menasha. You may have received one of John’s poppies. He was also a member of the VFW Post 2126, where he helped with Brat Fries and Flags for First Graders, and the 40&8. He was a longtime employee at Banta Corporation, working as a Pressman from 1951 until his retirement. On May 8, 2014 he was on the Old Glory Honor Flight.

Mom and Dad loved bowling and they bowled on a league for many years. He loved fishing and his fishing buddies, and the campfires where they all sat around to compare all their aches and pains.

He will be sadly missed by 5 children: Dale Pagel of Neenah, Beverly (Dan) Remmel of Menasha, Barbara Jahnke of Menasha, Shirley (Jeff) Wisnet of Hilbert and Susan (Mark) Fleming of Fremont, grandchildren: Molly (Ben) Schlichting, Kellen (sp friend Ross) Pagel, John Remmel, Dawn Philipsen, Andrew Remmel, Curtis (Megan) Jahnke, Nancy (Dan) Tyczkowski, Jessica (sp friend Chad) Pagel, Robert (sp friend Denise) Sipes, Branden (Alex) Fleming and Erika (sp friend Ky) Fleming, great-grandchildren: Hazel Schlichting, Ethan, Alex and Alivia Remmel, Henry and George Philipsen, Melody Remmel, Kirstin and Kolten Jahnke, Sophia and Jeffrey Schaff, and Macy and Benjamin Sipes, siblings: Marvin Pagel of Menasha, Lois Barth of Kimberly, David (Donna) Pagel of Neenah, and Sally (Jerry) Tummet of Neenah, as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Hazel, Hazel’s parents, Ray and Helen Cleveland, brothers: Robert, infant Harry and Kenneth Pagel, brother-in-law Lyle Barth, sisters-in-law Jackie Pagel, and Connie Pagel, great-grandson Keegan Jahnke.

There will be a memorial Service for John on Monday, June 21, 2021 at 11:00am at the Wichmann Funeral Homes, Laemmrich Funeral Home location on Milwaukee Street in Menasha. There will be a visitation on Monday at the funeral home from 9:00am until 11:00am. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery of Neenah at a later date.
