Entered eternal life on August 27, 2002, after a brief struggle with cancer. Joan was born on August 2, 1932 to Raymond and Mary (Reckin) Nehls and was a lifelong member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church and a resident of Appleton. Joan was mostly a full time wife and mother, she worked briefly at AAL and Grant’s Department Store and part time for several years at The Institute of Paper Chemistry. She enjoyed crocheting and many of her kids and grandchildren are enjoying her creations. She was the No. 1 fan of her kids while they were growing up and kept nudging them in the “right” direction. Joan is survived by her husband, Byron I. Grow, with whom she celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on February 23, 2002; son, Thomas (Cathy) Grow, Manitowoc, WI and their children, Chantel Grow, Manitowoc; Clayton (Stephanie) Grow, Beaver Dam, WI; Jill Haynes, Manitowoc; Joshua Haynes, Green Bay; son, Martin (Laury) Grow, and their children, Samantha, Brittany, Michaela, all of Appleton; daughter, Bonnie (Tim) Blob and their children, Kelsey, Parker and Hannah, all of Menasha; former daughter-in-law and husband, Connie and (Gary) Vanden Heuvel and their children Matt (Cindy) Grow, Elkhorn, WI; Emily Vanden Heuvel, Mukwonago, WI; Casey and Sam Vanden Heuvel, Appleton. She is further survived by a sister, Donna (Dennis) Short, Greenville; a brother, Richard (Barbara) Nehls, Middleton, WI; in-laws, Joe Grow, Appleton, Wava Vollmer, Appleton, Cec and Dot Grow, Wolf Point, MT, Maxine Grow, Kent, WA, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Jeffrey Allen Grow. Funeral services for Joan will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 30, 2002, at ST. PAUL EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, with Reverend Ralph C. Waack officiating. Entombment will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 pm, Thursday (tonight) and at the church on Friday, from 9:30 am until the time of the service. Memorial funds have been established for St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church and Fox Valley Lutheran High School.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Appleton Medical Center and Hospice for the care extended to Joan during her final days.
