Jerry Young, age 85 of Appleton, passed away at his home on Monday afternoon, December 16, 2024. Jerry was born in New London, WI on May 7, 1939, son of the late Cyrus and Beulah (Johnson) Young. He was raised on a farm with his family in Hortonville, WI. Jerry was a graduate of Hortonville High School and spent the next 6 years in the Navy, as an Avionics Electrician. While in the Navy, he got to travel around the world, which he was very proud of. His orders were extended to support the Cuban Missile Crisis. He then met and married Carol Kearn and together they raised three wonderful children. Carol preceded Jerry in death in 2017.
Most will remember Jerry for his longtime career at Miller Electric where he worked as a welding technician for over 30 years. Jerry enjoyed hunting, musky fishing and bowling. He played softball and was told by many that he was one the best fastball pitchers in Appleton. Jerry got the first hit ever at Sunset Park in Kimberly. He went on to become a softball coach for girls ages 9-15 years old for twelve years, in which he impacted many of them who went on to play softball for high school and college.
He is survived by his three children; Kelly (Jonathan) Dortman, Jill (M.H.) Penglase, and Michael Young. He is also survived by Rose Hornes, his wonderful girlfriend who he will be greatly missed by. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Joseph (Nicole) Fiatoa (great grandchildren Roman and soon Salem Fiatoa), Sabrina (Matthew) Tully, Isaiah (girlfriend Searra) Sanchez, Jack (Kia) Penglase (great grandchild Sylvie Penglase) and Diana Penglase. Other survivors include his brothers and sisters: Kathy Wolf (special friend Chuck), Donalda Brownson, Armella (Dick) Bloy, and Bob (Judy) Young; a sister-in-law Marion Dietrich and a niece Darlene Bagstad who was very special to him. In addition, Jerry leaves behind many other in-laws, nieces, nephews and relatives. Jerry also leaves behind many friends, including his longtime neighbor and beloved family friend Art Amann as well as his bestest friend for life, from his Navy days, Jim Lawler.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Wanda, an infant brother Johnny, brother-in-law Jerry Wolf, and a good friend Bill Mack.
We want to give a special thank you to Dick and Joan’s Supper Club... Pat, Sandy, Allie, Tracy, Lester, Bud along with the entire staff that gave him special care. And all of his friends he made there.
We are being told by many friends and family that Jerry is thought of as a legend.
