Jerome H. Block, 80, of Appleton, died April 15th at St Elizabeth's Hospital with his family by his side.
Jerry was born April 1st, 1929, son of the late George and Ida (Chudacoff) Block. Jerry grew up in Appleton graduating from Appleton High School in 1947. He served his Country in the United States Army, obtaining the rank of corporal and stationed at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation in Pennsylvania from June 1951 until his honorable discharge in September 1953. Jerry was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and attended the University of Wisconsin Law School. He received his Law Degree and was admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar in 1956. In 1957 he was admitted to practice in the United States Federal Court, Western Wisconsin District, and in 1958 to the Eastern Wisconsin District. In 1966, he earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Wisconsin, and in 1971 was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court. In 1976 Jerry was also admitted to practice in the United States Tax Court. He was a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, American Trial Lawyers Association, Moses Montefiore Congregation, B'Nai Brith, and ZBT Fraternity.
Jerry practiced law in Appleton first as a sole practioner and later forming the law firm of Block, Seymour and Samson which then merged with the law offices of Chudacoff and Liebzeit. Jerry loved the law and was still seeing clients at the time of his death. He was recognized in 2006 by the State Bar of Wisconsin for 50 years of service. He often said he was going to retire but never did.
On November 27th, 1964, Jerry married Carol Protheroe. They lived in Appleton and had a second home on the Chain O' Lakes outside Waupaca. They had two children, Julie and David. Jerry enjoyed spending time at their house on the Chain with his family and friends in the summer and winters in Bonita Springs, Florida. He has been attending Packer games regularly for more than 50 years. He was a fan of Wisconsin Badger football and basketball and the Cincinnati Reds. He enjoyed skiing, boating, traveling and his monthly poker game.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents George and Ida and his sister Natalie (Block) Cooper.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Carol, his daughter Julie Block Padden, his son-in-law Marty Padden of Baltimore; two grandchildren, Rachel and Lea Padden, a son David, of Appleton; a brother in law, Rufus Cooper and two nephews Michael and Carl Cooper.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior Street in Appleton, with Mr. Gary Wolfman officiating. Interment will follow in Moses Montefiore Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at noon. In lieu of flowers a Memorial Fund has been established at Wells Fargo Bank in Jerome's name.
