Age 84, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2001 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She was born on February 24, 1917 in Sussex, WI the daughter of the late Harvey and Louise (Hartkopf) Jeffery. In 1950 she married Edward J. Friedwald in Milwaukee. Jan graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay with a Masters Degree in Library Science in 1983. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Appleton serving on the Ladies Guild Fellowship. She was also active in Masonic activities including Waheed Court # 81 Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Anchorage, Alaska, was Grand Deputy of the International Order Rainbow for Girls in Alaska from 1960 – 1965, the Mont Clare Chapter # 845 O.E.S. in Chicago, the Arbor Shrine #54 White Shrine of Jerusalem, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Appleton Unit Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children Auxiliary. Jan also was active in the Auxiliary to Air Force Sergeants Association, the Appleton Medical Center Auxiliary, the Fox Valley Apartment Association, the VFW Auxiliary of Appleton, and the Fox Valley Association.
She is survived by her nephews Roy (Kathryn) Meissner of Merton, Wisconsin, and Rev. Lee (Helena) Meissner of Watertown, Wisconsin, a brother-in-law George (Betty) Friedwald of Appleton, a cousin Alice Champion of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband George Bucker who was killed in World War II, her second husband Edward J. Friedwald in 1991, her parents, a sister Helen May Meissner, a sister-in-law Florence Lawrence and a brother-in-law Albert Meissner.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, December 31, 2001 at 11:00 AM at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 East Franklin Street in Appleton with the Rev. Paul Reinhold officiating. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. A memorial fund for First United Methodist Church in Appleton is being established.
