Lifelong resident of Appleton D. Jean (Rhoder) Getsfried died October 3rd at Brookdale Senior Living. Born on March 9, 1921, Jean was the third of four children to parents Antone and Clara (Coon) Rhoder. Jean grew up living along the Fox River where she developed her passion for nature, especially wildflowers. On October 4, 1947 she was wed to Leo P. Getsfried, also of Appleton.
Throughout her life Jean was variously employed at Tuttle Press, Riverside Paper, Spiegel's, and the YMCA. Her great joy was in spending time at the family cottage on the Chain of Lakes in Waupaca where she was able to reconnect with fond memories of that area from her time in the young adult group of First United Methodist Church.
Jean is survived by daughter Christine (Richard) of Fremont; son Leo Jr. (Jeanne) of Mankato, MN; and son David (Tammy) of Pine River. Also grandchildren Julie (Wayne) Nadolske, Stephanie (Brian) Yun, Amy Foth, Louis Getsfried, Katrina Getsfried; and great grandchildren Kylie, Payton, Cyrus, Lydia, Kira and Marissa. Jean is also survived by sister-in-law Delores Dorsey and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband Leo, sisters Helen Reimer and Claramae Johnson, brother Harris Rhoder, sisters-in-law Frances (Homer) Earl, Kathryn (Arnie) Ganzen, Florence (Bert) Staples, Margaret Getsfried, Estelle Martin and brother-in-law Raymond Getsfried.
Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 325 E. Franklin Street, on Saturday October 6th, 2018 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Markus Wegenast officiating. Visitation at the church from 11:00 AM until time of services. Private interment at Riverside Cemetery in Appleton. A memorial fund in Jean’s name for dementia research is being established.
