LARSON, JANICE M. (Goedjen)
Janice M. Larson, passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2006, at Cherry Meadows. Jan was born in Two Rivers to Helen (Barman) Goedjen and the late Al Goedjen. She married James Larson on September 9, 1966 in Two Rivers. Jan took pride in her roles as wife, mother and good friend. The loves of her life were family, church, friends and senior citizens.
Jan graduated from Two Rivers High School in 1960 and did her undergraduate work at Alverno College in Milwaukee, graduating with a BS degree in Nursing. She did her graduate work at the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh receiving her MSN, Family Nurse Practitioner, in 1984. While at Oshkosh, she was elected to Sigma Theta Tau, a national. honor society of nursing. Her nursing career progressed and in the late 1970s she discovered her love of geriatric nursing while assisting staff and patients at Extended Care Center, Appleton. Upon receiving her Masters Degree, she founded the Agewise Program at Appleton Medical Center. Subsequently, she founded her own consulting firm, Extended Family, Inc. assisting clients in geriatric care for their family members.
During her nursing career, Jan was a member of the American Nurses Association, the Wisconsin Nurses Association–Board of Directors; Fox Valley Nurses Association; the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers–Board of Directors; Midwest Geriatric Care Managers Association (serving as president, vice-president and a member of the board of directors); and the Wisconsin Alzheimer‚Äôs Association.
Jan was also active in the community, serving as president of St. Bernard‚Äôs Parish Council and serving the Ladies of St. Bernard‚Äôs as Chairman and Vice-Chairman; Genevieve Paulson Circle of the King‚Äôs Daughters and Sons as president, vice-president and treasurer and co-founder of the Octoberfest Gourmet Appleton booth; L.E.A.V.E.N.–board of directors; R.S.V.P–Advisory Board; Leadership Fox Cities, as a member of the initial graduating class; PFLAG Fox Cities as co-treasurer and frequent speaker; as a member of Positive Voice; and on the board of directors of the Outagamie County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Jim; her son, James F., Jr. “Jay” (Jeanette) Larson, and their children, Joel F., Joanna M., and Jacob M. of Katy, Texas; and her son, David A. Larson, of Chicago; and her mother, Helen.. She is further survived by her aunts, Norma Barman, Green Bay, and Katherine (Edward) Sinkular, Sun City, Arizona; and numerous cousins.
The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2006, at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 West Pine Street, Appleton, with Fr. Dennis Ryan and Fr. John Bergstadt officiating. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Appleton, on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again on Monday directly at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. A parish prayer and scripture service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Appleton. A memorial has been established in her name to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association of Wisconsin and the American Cancer Society—Wisconsin Chapter. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Lee Vogel and her staff, Visiting Nurses Association, ThedaCare at Home, and the staff at Cherry Meadows for their loving care.
