Janice A. Flaherty, 88, passed away surrounded by family on Monday, July 8, 2024. She was born on February 3, 1936 to Roland “Bud” and Mildred (Karweick) Kuehnl in Appleton.
Janice loved being with her grandparents, in particular, Ma (Sophie) Karweick. She attended St. Therese grade school and Appleton High School. Following high school, she enlisted in the Marines. She attended bootcamp, marching through the swamps at Paris Island, SC and completed naval air training as an air traffic controller. Her final duty station was in El Toro, CA where she met her husband, Kevin, while in the Marines. Their love was evident after a few dates, and they were married the following year.
Subsequently, they moved to St. Paul, MN where they started their family. With their fourth child soon to arrive, Janice and Kevin moved to Appleton, Wisconsin in 1960 with plans for Kevin to start a new business and continue growing their family. Eventually, they moved to a large, 100-year old country home in Center Valley, WI.
While raising seven children, breeding and grooming dogs, she also found time to return to college, earning degrees in accounting and banking. During this time, she also worked the night shift as a CNA. Janice was fortunate to be offered many career advances. Following college, she began a career with the City of Appleton. She scored extremely high on the civil exam and was eventually hand-picked by the Milwaukee office of the federal government and her career as an agent for the U.S. Treasury began. After over 20 years, Janice retired alongside her husband, Kevin to their lake home in Mountain, WI. An animal lover her entire life, Janice resumed her love of breeding dogs during her retirement years. She and Kevin created Lost Lake Boxers where she bred AKC boxers. Janice also returned to work part-time as a clerk for the Town of Riverview. Janice and Kevin returned to the Fox Cities and loved traveling to Florida as snowbirds, boating and their trip to Ireland.
Janice had a beautiful singing voice and enjoyed singing with the Chaminade Women’s Chorus and multiple church choirs. She inherited her voice and love of music from her Dad. They harmonized many times during Sunday drives or the many beloved family parties in the Kuehnl basement.
Janice is survived by her children: Tim (Julie), Monica (Steven) Schinke, Nancy (George) Peters, Patrick (Linda), Daniel (Grit), Kevin (Tina), Terry (Penny); grandchildren: Krystle (Jason) Stolzel, Kevin (MaryRose) Alferi, Bryan Alferi, Amy (Joe) Ciochetto, Nicole (Jon) Gilmore, Joey (Danielle) Stephani, Shelby, Sydney, and Alec Flaherty, Caitlin (James) McClain, Corey (Taylor) Flaherty, Sean (Monica) Flaherty, Olivia Flaherty; great- grandchildren Corbin Stolzel, Sienna, Lila and Mia Ciochetto, Noah Gilmore, Harper and Brady Stephani, Oliver and Ava McClain, Liam Flaherty; step grandchildren Amber (Josh) Haynes, Dana Peters, Chris (Meaghan) Peters; step great- grandchildren Ethan and Aubrey Haynes and Hailey and Regan Peters.
