James W. DuBose

James W. DuBose, age 54, died Thursday, August 4, 2011 in Town of Menasha under hospice care. Born in Chicago, IL, James' life was saddened by the early deaths of his father, mother, aunt, two brothers, sister and two sons.

He grew up around the famous Maxwell Street Market, and then lived much of his life in Maywood, IL or in the Illinois judicial system. Following incarceration, James' life was transformed by anger management, his growing realization of God's activity in his life, and the responsibility of caring for orphaned teenage nephews and a niece. He extended forgiveness to the young man who shot and killed his son, experiencing a lightness of spirit in that holy moment. He was generous with everything he had and coached children and adults to practice Random Acts of Kindness. “King Jimmy,” who once destroyed a town, became “Sweet Baby James,” a community leader.

James was always working or seeking work, as steady employment was difficult with his record. He helped develop a framing shop, cooked in an Italian restaurant, drove a forklift, worked security for Arlington Race Track, recycled car and truck parts, ran several shipping offices and for five years was custodian and watched over the seniors and children at Kanaya Catholic Church in Maywood, IL. This spring, James worked at Appleton Goodwill Industries until he could no longer stand.

During his months in the Fox Cities, he made many friends at Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Circles of Support and with the dogs of Dublin Trails. He saw his first parade, visited a zoo, watched deer grazing in a meadow, cultivated a garden and enjoyed the Farmers' Market. He often commented on the peacefulness and friendliness of the area. James loved classic cars, BBQ ribs, funny stories and his dog, Fitzgerald. Pictures from his last months are posted on Facebook: James DuBose.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 10 at 5pm at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 803 E. College Ave. Appleton, followed by a supper. The service will be officiated by Rev. Kathy Keener-Han. A second service will be held in the Chicago area.
