Strohm, James R.
James R. Strohm, age 85, of Appleton, died peacefully in his sleep, Wednesday, December 21, 2005. He was born November 29, 1920, to the late Roman and Geneva Strohm, in Milwaukee and following his graduation from high school he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. James served in the Navy for 27 years, during WW II, the Korea and Vietnam Conflicts, retiring in 1968. During his military career he attended and graduated from Lawrence University, where he was quarterback of Lawrence Vikings football team. Following his retirement, James settled in the Shawano area. His life long passion was collecting model trains. James was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Arline E. Geenen Strohm, whom he married on November 29, 2002; two sons, James J. (Dawn) Strohm, Oshkosh; Dr. John M. (Cindy) Strohm, Madison; seven step-children, Judy (Jack) Lamers, Centerville, OH; Jim (Janine) Geenen, Guyana; Kathy (Dale) Mitchell, Menasha; John (Shelley) Geenen, Wyzatta, MN; Vicky (Joe) Van Hout, Little Chute; Lynn (Shannon) Oskorg, New Castle, CO; Debbie (Steve) Stumpf, Menasha; 25 grandchildren, Allison Strohm, Peter Strohm, Laura Strohm, Christine (Nick) Limb, Kelly (Rick) Turner, Bryan (Cheryl) Lamers, Michael (Diane) Lamers, Colleen (Mark) Gross, Katie (Kirk) Niemi, Patrick (Dr. Jen) Geenen, Jessica Geenen, Jason (Kara) Florek, Ryan Florek, Corey Florek, Josh Mitchell, Tony Mitchell, Chelsea Geenen, Brooks Geenen, Melissa Van Hout, Lucas Van Hout, Ben (Anne) LuMaye, Nicole LuMaye, Brooklyn Mader, Brett Stumpf, Maddie Stumpf; 24 great grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Jeanne) Strohm, Excelsior, MN; and a sister-in-law, Mara Strohm, Milwaukee; and special friends, Joan Murphy and Kay Talbot. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nora A. Strohm, October 2001and a brother Jerry Strohm.
The funeral liturgy for James will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 24, 2005, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 West Pine Street, with Father Dennis Ryan officiating. Entombment will be in Appleton Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 am Saturday, until the time of the mass. A memorial fund is being established.
