Age 80, died in Appleton on July 16, 2002. James was born to the late Michael and Katherine (Dercks) Verhagen in Little Chute on July 25, 1921. On September 18, 1947, he married Theodosia ''Dote'' Kiffe in Kaukauna. She preceded him in death in 1993. As a member of the United States Army Air Corps., James served in England during World War II. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion Post in Wrightstown. James owned and operated a dry wall business in Kaukauna. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and particularly enjoyed playing cards with them. Watching football was a favorite past-time, James enjoyed watching the young athletes as well as the professionals. James loved animals of all kinds, whether it be watching birds in his backyard or taking care of his horse.
James is survived by two sons: William (Debbie) Verhagen and Paul (Deb) Verhagen, both of Kaukauna; two daughters: Jane (Steve) Sprangers and Donna (Jerry) Schoen, both of Kaukauna; 10 grandchildren: Troy (Diane), Ben and Kevin Verhagen; Mark and Leah Sprangers, Jenny (Aaron) La Voy, Lori Schoen, and Tanya, Lindsey, and Tyler Verhagen; three great-grandchildren: Trevor Verhagen, and Kaylee and Ashley La Voy; brother, Mike Verhagen of Appleton; two sisters: Jeannette Van Deurzen of Little Chute and Barbara Van Asten of Little Chute; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
James is preceded in death by his wife, parents, sisters and brothers.
The funeral liturgy will be at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Jack Mullarkey officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
