It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Mielke, who departed this world peacefully at the age of 94 at St. Paul Elder Services in Kaukauna, Wisconsin.

Jim was born on September 28, 1930, in Appleton, Wi, to Herbert & Cecilia (Fischer) Mielke. Siblings Rosemary Garvey (Willard), Eunice Kappell (Clifford), Dorothy Mengarelli (Albert) and brother Joseph have all preceded him in death. His sister, Barbara Adrian (Jack) and brother-in-law, Al Mengarelli, still surviving.

Jim's life was a testament to resilience, dedication and tough love. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17, and proudly served during the Korean War, where he was a survivor of the Chosin Reservoir, earning his place among the esteemed Chosin Few.

On May 22, 1954, Jim married the love of his life, Marilyn Sorensen. Together, they built a beautiful life over 68 years, filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Marilyn sadly preceded him in death in 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving a void that can never be filled.

Jim is survived by his three daughters, Julia Slavick (David), Rebecca (Becky) Grothe (John), and Lisa Mielke (Glenn Fagaley). He took great pride in his family, which also includes two grandchildren, Sarah Malakoff (Ben) and Bradley Slavick (Megan Justus), along with four great-grandchildren, Norah, Arthur, Maya, and Max.

Throughout his career as a bricklayer and mason for PG Miron Construction Company, Jim played a significant role in shaping the Appleton area and the surrounding Fox River Valley. He found joy in woodworking, bowling, golfing, assembling puzzles, and playing a mean game of cribbage. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for fishing and hunting.

Jim was an active member of the local VFW and Kiwanis Club in Appleton, and he cherished the camaraderie of his fellow veterans at multiple Chosin Few reunion events across the country. In 2012, he had the honor of participating in Flights of Honor as a retired Marine, a moment he held dear.

A memorial visitation will be held for Jim from 10-11 AM on Friday, March 28, 2025 at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St, Appleton, WI 54911 with a memorial service to follow at 11 AM.  Jim will be laid to rest with his wife, Marilyn at Highland Memorial Park following the service.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to St. Paul Elder Services.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff members in hospice and at St. Paul Elder Services who cared for both Jim and Marilyn over the past few years. Your kindness and compassion brought comfort to Dad, and your dedication will always be appreciated more than you’ll ever know.

Rest in peace, Jim. You will be missed.
