James (Jim) Loew, age 83 of Appleton, WI, dear husband of Mary and dear father of Anne, Mike, and Dan, passed away on July 29, 2024.
Jim was born in Milwaukee, WI, on August 18, 1940 to Frank Loew and Dorothy Lanigan Loew. He graduated from Wauwatosa High School. He served in the Navy as a radioman. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater in history and political science, and also attended Drake University Law School for a year and a half. He changed direction to sales for half of his career, most of it selling banking equipment for LeFebure Corporation. He concluded his work life with the State of Wisconsin as a Motor Vehicle Examiner.
In December of 1966, he married Mary Magnuson. They were blessed with 57 years of a loving and joyous marriage. They delighted in and were so proud of their children and their spouses and their four grandchildren. Jim loved being engaged in their activities, loved the camping, excursions to museums, historical sites and parks, and trips cross-country. In time, he and Mary would visit 49 states, neglecting Nevada. He read voraciously and encouraged curiosity. His enthusiasm and mellow nature and sense of humor created so much joy!
Always loyal, he loved engaging with all the Loews and Magnusons, with dear friends going back to High School and discovered through the years. He loved all gatherings, was the resource for ancestral history, and amused everyone with tales of he and his brothers.
Jim loved Appleton and its opportunities. He loved being a member of First United Methodist Church, a lector for many years, and a member of the Church Council. He was a member of the Optimist Club, took his turn as President, involving himself in numerous fundraisers. He loved Lawrence University, attending numerous concerts, lectures, and athletic events. He was a Cub Scout Leader and a soccer referee. And of course he loved the Packers and Badgers.
Jim was compassionate! He donated a kidney to his brother, Dick. He volunteered for years at the Homeless Shelter. He went to Mississippi for a building project. He helped provide a home for an immigrant family. He, with the family, adopted Grandmas at nursing homes.
A child writes “Thank you Dad for teaching us to lean towards knowledge, kindness, travel, hard work, and most importantly, family. We love you!”
Jim is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter, Anne Bogen (Scott) and child Ava; his son, Michael Loew (Christie) and children Grace and James; his son, Daniel Loew (Juliana) and child Beatriz; his sister-in-law, Barbara Loew; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Dorothy Loew; and his brothers and their wives, Richard (Audrey) Loew, Robert (Chris) Loew, and Thomas Loew.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 14 at First United Methodist Church in Appleton, with visitation from 9:30 to 11:30, and service at 11:30.
