Isla D. Mereness
(nee Hendricks)
Age 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 10, 2002, surrounded by her family at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Kenneth Martin. Isla was born on October 17, 1908, daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Dietzler) Hendricks. In 1927, Isla married Lloyd Mereness, and they enjoyed 48 years of marriage together, until he preceded her in death in 1975. Isla, with her husband Lloyd, were respected members of Kaukauna’s Business Community all of their working lives. They owned and operated Mereness Transfer and Trucking for many years, retiring from the Mereness Stop and Shop liquor store. Isla was known for her keen sense of business accounting. She was a graduate of Kaukauna High School and during those years, she played live piano mood music for the silent movies at local theatres. Isla was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where she was active in the Alter Society and the Sunshine Ladies. She was always supportive of her children, and volunteered her time as a Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader and K.H.S. band mother. Isla was a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary and a longtime member of the Kaukauna Elks Club, where she could often be found at evenings end playing the piano, with her husband Lloyd singing at her side. For over sixty years, Isla actively played bridge with a group of life-long friends. Isla will be greatly missed by her two sons, Dennis (Betty) Mereness, Kaukauna; Stephen (Betsy) Mereness, Little Chute; and her two daughters, Lois (Kenneth) Martin, Orland Park Illinois; Joanne (Gary) Vohs, Kaukauna. She is further survived by 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Eunice and Donna Hendricks; and many nieces and nephews. Isla was preceded in death by her son Thomas; 2 sisters, Eva Landreman; Joan Mereness; and her 3 brothers, Robert, Richard and Joseph Hendricks. The Mass of Resurrection will be held at 5:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 119 West Seventh Street, Kaukauna, with Rev. David Schmidt officiating. The interment will be held at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Friends will be received at the church on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service.
