Irene J. Purdo, Appleton, age 80, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, died peacefully at home on Saturday, September 15, 2007.
Irene was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she attended St. Casimir School, Riverside High School and Marquette University. She began her work as a teacher in Milwaukee and continued as a substitute teacher in Appleton where she has lived since 1964. She devoted her life to her husband, E. Dane and his commitment to Lawrence University, as well as to her children and their life together in the Fox Cities. Irene’s strong Catholic faith was demonstrated in her kind treatment of others and her dedication to the church. She taught religious education in Appleton at St. Therese, St. Mary, and Holy Spirit Parishes. She enjoyed mentoring children in preparation for First Holy Eucharist. She also sang in the resurrection choir at St. Mary Parish.
Her zest for life was evident to the many who called her friend. She loved to golf and was an avid member of the Ladies Tuesday Golf League. She loved downhill skiing since meeting her husband as a member of Vagabond Ski Club in Milwaukee. Most especially, Irene loved to dance. Irene and Dane’s dancing marveled all who joined them as members of Century Dance Club. The two enjoyed years of camaraderie with dear friends who participated in the One Nighter’s play reading group. Irene was also a former member of the Town and Gown Book Club.
Survivors include her husband of forty seven years, E. Dane Purdo, son Michael (Cindy) Purdo, daughters Mary (James) Peksa, Melanie (Sam) Bomier, her grandchildren, Richard Peksa, Benjamin, Daniel, and Carly Bomier, brother, Casey Szczygiel (Dorothy), sisters, Dorothy Borzenski (Joseph), Jean Rakowski and Penny Seymour, and nieces and nephews.
