Age 59, passed away unexpectedly at Mercy Medical Center, Oshkosh on Tuesday, July 26, 2005. She was born in Greenleaf on July 8, 1946. She was the daughter of the late Norbert and Florence (Diny) Kersten. On February 24, 1968, she married Thomas Strenn at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Greenleaf. Irene was employed at SECURA Insurance for seven years and also worked part time at Kohl’s Department Store for 20 years. Irene was a selfless, giving, Christian woman. She always put others before herself, and the memory of her will serve as an inspiration to her family and friends forever. Irene enjoyed spending time with her family including having coffee with her sisters and holding her grandchildren. Walking, sewing and quilting were some of her favorite pastimes. She will also be fondly remembered for her outstanding bakery.
Irene is survived by her husband of 37 years, Thomas; children: Andrew (Naomi) Strenn of Minneapolis MN, Peter (Jodi) Strenn of Appleton and their children: Hope, Payton and John; Paula (Paul) Bonfigt of Kimberly and their children: Michaela, Aaron and Olivia; Luke (Amy) Strenn of Appleton and their children: Megan and Alexa; Matthew (Kristi) Strenn of Appleton and their child, Amara; and Michael Strenn of Neenah; sisters: Cathy Olejnikzak, Rita (Dick) Koltz, Doris (Don) Wegand, Linda (Bernie) Vanderheiden, Mary (Andy) Hassemer and Louann (Warren) Rueden; brothers: Joe (Evie) Kersten and Dave (Bernetta) Kersten. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Irene is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Paul.
The funeral liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2005 at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, 222 E. Fremont Street, Appleton, with Fr. Robert Karuhn officiating. Friends will be received at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Tri-County Chapel, on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Greenleaf.
The family extends a special thank you to SECURA for their thoughtful help while Irene was in the Hospital. Further, a special thank you to Mercy Medical Center for their wonderful care.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Irene’s name is being established.
