Hilmar L. ‘Bill’ Solberg
Age 83, of Appleton, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2002. He was born the son of Erick and Nannie (Nelson) Solberg on December 30, 1918, in Iola, WI. Bill was in the U.S. Army and in active duty in WWII, from 1941 until 1945, as a staff sergeant. He married Arlene Greb in Appleton, in February of 1943, and lived here since 1945. Bill worked in advertising for the Koehring Co. formerly known as the Fox River Tractor Co. Bill became involved in Kiwanis and served as president of the Appleton Downtown Kiwanis Club. He was appointed Governor of the Wisconsin and Upper Michigan District, and was elected International President of Kiwanis from 1978-79, and traveled worldwide on behalf of the organization. Bill was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, serving as lay leader of the congregation and holding other church offices. His hobbies included: woodworking, photography, tree farming, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene; daughters: Christine (William) Bernhagen, Mankato, MN, Rae Ellen (Paul) Sanders, Sturgeon Bay, son: Curtis (Susan) Appleton, WI; five grandchildren: Nissa (Brian) Bissonette, Grant Bernhagen, Ross (Lori) Gullikson, Laura and Kelly Solberg, and great granddaughter, Madison. He is also survived by brothers: Rev. Clarence, Myron, Lloyd, Orin, Emery, and Alton, and sisters: Marcella Anderson and Doris Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruth Brocker, and infant son, Gary William Solberg.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 14, 2002 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church (740 E. College Ave.) at 11:00 AM with Pastors David Kalas and Lynn Kollath officiating.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM until the time of the service.
The family would like to thank the people at Rennes Health Center for their kind care of Bill. Interment will take place in Highland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.
