Age 90, passed away at her home on Tuesday, October 8, 2003 and completed her life’s final journey. She is now in the presence of her lord and God. Hilda was born in Wrightstown on September 20, 1913, daughter of the late John and Antoinette (Kerkhoff) Liebergen. In 1938, she married Hubert Captain at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Appleton; he preceded her in death in 1988. Hilda was a Christian role model who was deeply committed to her faith life. She lived each day by embodying her Catholic principles. For many years, Hilda was an active volunteer and faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and also supported missions and orphanages worldwide. Near and dear to her heart was the St. Joseph Food Pantry, where she volunteered countless hours, and was honored to be the 1988 Volunteer of the Year. She also enjoyed tending her garden and reading.
Survivors include five children: Ken (Daryl) Captain of Carson City, Nevada; Lynn (John) Pfefferle of Appleton; Dennis (Joan) Captain of Appleton; Leann (Jay) Ross of Denver, Colorado; Lois Constantine of Coal Creek Canyon, Colorado; six grandchildren: Cary Captain, Anne (Jay) Walkowski, Michael (Lydie) Pfefferle, Amy (Eric) Oelhafen, James J. Captain, and Sara Constantine; four great-grandchildren: Joseph and Lauren Walkowski, Charlie Pfefferle, and Emma Oelhafen; a sister: Elsie Branchford of Appleton; a daughter-in-law: Carol Captain of Appleton; and a sister-in-law: Stella Liebergen. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1988, sons Thomas Captain and James S. Captain, brothers Alvin (Ceil) Liebergen, Harold Liebergen, and Marvin (Hattie) Liebergen; sisters Mildred and Irene Liebergen, and a brother-in-law Howard Branchford.
The funeral liturgy for Hilda will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 10, 2003 at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W. Lawrence Street in Appleton with Fr. Larry Abler officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 9:30 AM until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Hilda’s name.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to all of the physicians, nurses, and technicians for the care, concern, compassion, and professional manner shown to Hilda by Affinity Hospice and St. Elizabeth Hospital staff members. Thank you all so very much.
