Age 83, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca. Herb was born in Milwaukee on March 18, 1919, son of the late John and Anna (Bieck) Gieschen. On September 21, 1940, he married the former Esther Rohleder in Milwaukee; she preceded him in death in 1992. For many years, Herb worked as a draftsman for the engineering firm of Graef, Anhalt, & Schloemer in Milwaukee. During World War II, he served in the United States Army, and received a Purple Heart for injuries suffered in the Battle of the Bulge. He was an active volunteer at Wisconsin Lutheran Child and Family Service as well as being involved at St. James Ev. Lutheran Church and served as a consultant at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
He is survived by two daughters: Lois (Jerry) Zoellner of Neenah and Eunice LeMay of California; seven grandchildren: Rachel (Troy) Schulz of Neenah, Rebecca (Dennis) Bowman of Fond du Lac, Mark (Amy) Zoellner of Eden Prairie, MN, Paul (Michelle) Zoellner of Neenah, Jonathan Zoellner of Neenah, Ruth (Peter) Westendorf of Chetek, and Joel (Kirsten) Zoellner of Neenah; fourteen great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marie Geiger of Watertown and Ruth Stelljes of New Ulm, MN. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Esther, an infant son Paul, two brothers, and four sisters.
Funeral services for Herb will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 18, 2002 at ST. JAMES EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2028 N. 60th Street in Milwaukee with Rev. Tony McKenzie officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 – 7 PM and again directly at the church on Friday from 11 AM until the hour of the services.
