Age 97, died at St. Paul Home on Wednesday, January 28, 2004. She was a resident there since 1997. Helen was born in Plover, WI on August 14, 1906, daughter of the late Amelia “Emma” (Flatoff) and John Woloseck. She moved to Appleton at an early age and worked at a hotel there. Later she became a waitress in Milwaukee. There she met George Karnitz and later married him. She and George operated Karnitz Bar on Second Street in Kaukauna most of their married life. They sold it in 1967 when George became a truck driver for Olsen Transportation Co. and then Kaukauna Club Cheese. He preceded her in death in 1977. In 1981, She married Walter De Groot of Green Bay. They lived in Kaukauna and did extensive traveling with friends from Green Bay. Walter preceded her in death in 1994.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and eleven siblings, seven sisters and four brothers. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends.
She was a long time member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2401 Main Avenue, Kaukauna. Friends and family may call at the church on Saturday, January 31, 2004, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the mass at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Dave Schmidt officiating. Entombment will be in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum, Bay Settlement Road, Green Bay.
A memorial fund in Helen’s name has been established for St. Paul Home.
Special thanks to the entire staff at the St. Paul Home for the excellent care given to Helen during her seven years there. A very special thank you is extended to Sister Dorothy for her innovative ways of making Helen laugh or smile.
