Harry Spiegelberg, 88, of Appleton, WI died on Saturday, July 13th peacefully and surrounded by family.
Harry was born on April 24, 1936, in New London, Wisconsin to Harry and Gladys Spiegelberg. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Chemical Engineering in December of 1959. He went on to receive his PhD in Paper Chemistry from the Institute of Paper Chemistry and his MBA from the University of Chicago. Harry began his career with Kimberly-Clark in February of 1959 and retired as a Vice President in 1996. His name is on six US patents and 10 international patents. He received the University of Wisconsin College of Engineering’s Distinguished Service Citation and the University of Wisconsin’s Distinguished Alumni award. He was the co-founder of the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame and was later inducted into the Hall.
Harry was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Christ, serving various leadership roles over five decades including Senior Deacon and Moderator. He was a member of Rotary and served as the Chairman of the Board of Leaven.
Harry loved traveling, taking many trips throughout the country and the world with his beloved wife, Bonnie, his family, and friends. The family are avid Badger fans, and he was a long-time season ticket holder for both football and basketball. The pair enjoyed their winters in Indio, California playing golf and enjoying time spent with friends. Harry spent many hours on his hobby farm, driving one of his six tractors and playing farmer like he did as a child in Larson. He spent 25 years backpacking with his best friend, John McFadden, in areas ranging from the Porcupine Mountains of Michigan to their beloved Escalante Canyon.
Harry is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Bonnie; his children Susan (Michael) Schuldes, Sharon (Jim) Kozlowski, Stephen (Denise) and Scott; his grandchildren Stephanie and Hugh (Zoe) Schuldes; Matthew Kozlowski, Kelsey (Patrick) Mesick, Katelyn and Brie Spiegelberg; Athena, Harrison and Truman Greaves; his great-grandchildren Emerson and Charlie Mesick. He is also survived by his sisters, Evelyn Peterson, and Sandy Huebner, and by John McFadden, his dearest friend.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Congregational Church of Christ on July 25th at 1pm with visitation from 11:00-1pm. Memorials can be directed to Leaven or the First Congregational Church.
The family of Harry Spiegelberg would like to thank Dr. Lee Vogel for all her care during his battle with Parkinson’s, and the staff of Touchmark and Moments Hospice for all the loving care they gave to Harry in his last seven months.
